About this observance
From Bhadrapada Purnima to Sarva Pitru Amavasya, families offer tarpan, pind daan and brahman bhoj on the tithi of their ancestors passing.
Importance
Shraddh is a debt to the ancestors; its performance is said to remove Pitru Dosh and bless the lineage.
History
Prescribed in the Garuda Purana and practised without break for thousands of years.
Mythological story
Karna was sent back to earth for sixteen days to donate food after receiving only gold in the afterlife.
