About this observance
Beginning on Shukla Chaturthi of Bhadrapada, clay murtis of Ganesha are installed with pran pratishtha, worshipped for one to ten days and immersed on Anant Chaturdashi.
Importance
Ganesha is the remover of obstacles; installing him at home is believed to bless the family with success all year.
History
Popularised as a public festival by Lokmanya Tilak in 1893 to unite society.
Mythological story
Parvati created Ganesha from turmeric paste; Shiva restored his life with an elephant head and named him first among gods.
