About this observance

Hariyali Teej falls on Shukla Tritiya of Shravan and celebrates the reunion of Shiva and Parvati after her long penance. Women fast, apply mehndi, swing on decorated jhulas and worship Parvati for a happy married life.

Importance

Considered the most auspicious vrat for marital harmony and the wellbeing of the husband.

History

Observed for centuries across North India, especially Rajasthan, UP and Bihar, with royal Teej processions in Jaipur.

Mythological story

Goddess Parvati performed penance for 108 births before Lord Shiva accepted her as his consort on this tithi.
