Mythology Behind Sundar-Kaand Path
The Sundar Kand is the fifth book of Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas (16th century), and the only book of the epic named 'beautiful'. It tells of Hanuman's leap across the ocean to Lanka: how he reminds the despondent vanara army of its own strength, overcomes obstacles, finds Sita in Ashok Vatika, delivers Ram's message, allows himself to be captured, and burns Lanka before returning with the words 'Sita mili' — she is found. Tradition holds that this book is 'beautiful' because it is here that despair turns to hope. Devotees recite it to absorb Hanuman's courage, humility and single-minded devotion, especially before journeys and new ventures.
