The Shrimad Bhagavata Purana frames itself within a remarkable story: King Parikshit, cursed to die in seven days, sits on the bank of the Ganga and asks the sage Shukadeva what a person facing death should do. Shukadeva's answer — listen to the stories of the Lord — becomes the Bhagavata itself. This is why the Bhagwat Katha is traditionally heard over seven days (Saptah): listeners retrace Parikshit's seven days. The text's twelve skandhas range across creation, the avataras and the lives of devotees, with the tenth skandha's account of Krishna's childhood, the gopis' love and the Ras Lila at its heart. The Bhagavata is revered as the ripest fruit of the tree of the Vedas in Vaishnava tradition.
