Traditional background
Mythology Behind Vivaha Sanskar (Wedding Rituals)
Vivaha is counted among the most important of the sixteen Sanskaras, and the Grihya Sutras describe its rites in detail. At its heart is Agni, the sacred fire, invoked as the divine witness to the couple's vows — which is why the Saptapadi, the seven steps around the fire, is the moment Hindu law and tradition both treat as the completion of the marriage. Scripture and tradition also remember divine marriages as ideals: the wedding of Shiva and Parvati, and of Ram and Sita — still celebrated as Vivah Panchami — are retold as models of commitment. Each region layers its own customs over this shared core, from the Bengali Shubho Drishti to the South Indian Kanyadaanam and Thali.
