Traditional background
Mythology Behind Naamkarana Sanskar
Naamkarana is one of the sixteen Sanskaras described in the Grihya Sutras, the ancient texts of domestic rites that guide a Hindu life from birth onwards. These texts treat the giving of a name as a sacred act — a child's first formal welcome into the family and community. Some families choose a starting syllable from the birth Nakshatra, following Jyotish tradition; others choose a deity's name, an ancestor's name, or simply a name they love. The Grihya Sutras themselves record several naming conventions, which is why practice differs so widely between regions and communities today.
