Traditional background
Mythology Behind Janeu Sanskar
Upanayana is among the oldest Sanskaras, described in the Grihya Sutras as the moment a child is led (upa-naya) to the teacher to begin learning. The ceremony's heart is the Brahmopadesham — the whispering of the Gayatri Mantra, the revered verse to Savitri from the Rigveda (3.62.10), into the child's ear by the Guru or father. The three strands of the yajnopavita are traditionally explained in several ways — as reminders of one's debts to the seers, the ancestors and the gods, or of purity in thought, word and deed. Eligibility and age have always varied by community, and many modern families perform the ceremony for daughters as well; these differences deserve respect rather than a single imposed form.
