Religious & Cultural Significance
Staying awake (jagran) in devotion is an expression of love for the Goddess. The Tara Rani katha is often narrated near dawn in Punjabi and North Indian tradition.
Mythology Behind Jagrata
Jagrata grows out of Shakta devotion — worship of the Goddess as the Divine Mother — which finds its scriptural heart in the Durga Saptashati (Markandeya Purana), the text that tells of the Goddess's victories over Mahishasura and other demons. The all-night vigil itself is a folk-devotional form rather than a scripted rite: staying awake through the night is understood as an offering of one's comfort and sleep to the Mother. In Punjabi and North Indian tradition, the Tara Rani ki Katha — the story of a devout queen whose faith was tested and vindicated — is narrated near dawn. During Navratri, jagran accompanies the wider worship of the Goddess in her nine forms.
