Traditional background
Mythology Behind Shiv Puja
Shiva — the auspicious one — is among the most ancient and beloved deities of India, worshipped as the great ascetic of Mount Kailash, the lord of dance (Nataraja), and the compassionate Bholenath who is pleased by simple devotion. The Puranas tell of his drinking the halahala poison to save the worlds during the Samudra Manthan, holding it in his throat and becoming Neelkanth; of the Ganga descending through his matted hair; of his marriage to Parvati. The Shivling, the aniconic form at the heart of his worship, has been revered for millennia. Devotees offer water, milk and bilva leaves with the Panchakshari mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' — worship that asks little and, tradition holds, gives much.
