About this Puja
Satyanarayan Katha is the story of Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayan form. It teaches truthfulness (satya) and devotion, and is performed on Purnima, new beginnings, and to give thanks after fulfilled wishes. Families gather to listen to five chapters (adhyay) followed by aarti and prasad.
Traditional narration and puja for prosperity and family harmony.
Traditional background
Mythology Behind Satyanarayan Katha & Puja-Hawan
The Satyanarayan Katha is traditionally attributed to the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, where the sage Narada asks Lord Vishnu how suffering humanity can find relief, and Vishnu answers by describing the Satyanarayan Vrat. The Katha's five chapters tell of a poor Brahmin who performed the puja and was uplifted, a woodcutter who did the same, and a merchant and King Tungadhwaja who neglected their vow and faced difficulties until they made amends. The stories' shared lesson is satya — truthfulness — and gratitude: remembering with thanks what one has received. This is why families perform the puja after a wedding, a new home, a recovery or any blessing they wish to acknowledge.
