Traditional background
Mythology Behind Mata Ki Chowki
Mata Ki Chowki belongs to the Shakta tradition — worship of the Goddess as the Divine Mother — whose scriptural heart is the Durga Saptashati of the Markandeya Purana, the text that recounts her victories over Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishumbha. The chowki itself is a folk-devotional form: a low platform (chowki) bearing the Goddess's image, a continuous lamp, and an evening of bhajans sung in her praise. It is closely related to the all-night Jagrata, and in Gujarat Garba gatherings play a similar role. Families hold a chowki in Navratri, on a fulfilled vow, or simply out of love for the Mother — devotion expressed through song rather than elaborate rite.
