Business worship grows from two old streams. The first is Ayudha Puja — honouring the tools of one's work, observed on Dussehra and Vishwakarma Puja — extended by traders to their account books and shops. The second is Chopda Pujan, the worship of new account books on Diwali, when business families traditionally open fresh ledgers with the symbols Shubh (auspicious) and Labh (benefit) and invoke Lakshmi and Ganesha. In Gujarat and Rajasthan the Diwali Chopda Pujan effectively begins the business year.
