Traditional background
Mythology Behind Bhoomi Pujan
In Hindu tradition the earth is revered as Bhoomi Devi — Mother Earth — a goddess in her own right. The Bhumi Sukta of the Atharva Veda is among the oldest hymns praising the earth as the patient bearer of all life. Tradition also associates every site with the Vastu Purusha, and digging the ground without acknowledgement is traditionally seen as taking without asking. Bhoomi Pujan is therefore understood as seeking Mother Earth's permission and blessings before disturbing her surface — a moment of humility before a large undertaking. Customs vary: some communities place a copper or silver Nag pair in the foundation pit, others perform Shilanyas (foundation-stone laying) alongside.
